About

Compliance, Diversity and Ethics provides leadership and support on matters relating to equity, diversity, access, respect and inclusiveness for all members of the George Mason University community.

Welcome to Compliance, Diversity, and Ethics

At Mason, the rich diversity of our students, faculty and staff is an essential source of our institutional strength. I am honored and excited to serve as the Vice President of Compliance, Diversity and Ethics and Chief Diversity Officer at George Mason University.

This office is committed to promoting diversity, inclusion, and equity, as well as a culture of integrity and a community that values shared responsibility. Our mission is to build Mason into a world-class model of inclusive academic excellence.

With the changing face of the nation itself, the terms “diversity” and “inclusion” have expanded over time to include persons from a growing array of backgrounds, cultures, identities, and experiences. Because diversity is dynamic, not static, Mason will continue to reflect these changes, understanding that a diverse learning environment benefits everyone.

Decades of research have shown that diversity, nurtured in a welcoming and respectful environment, encourages critical thinking, reduces harmful stereotypes, and strengthens the ability to communicate, work and play across lines of identity and difference.

These are essential skills for participants in a globally connected world, and Mason is committed to providing the richly diverse learning environment that all Mason students need to become the able leaders and productive citizens that our nation and world demand.

Diversity enhances the learning experience by exposing and challenging us to consider, weigh and value the thoughts, experiences and practices of those different from ourselves.

I encourage you to explore CDE’s website, where you'll find a wealth of information on initiatives, policies, and resources related to diversity, inclusion, accessibility, and ethics.

Diversity, one of our foundational values, is a key element in the Mason IDEA (innovative, diverse, entrepreneurial, accessible), which defines who we are as a community. We believe that a diversity of opinions, cultures, and perspectives is what provides vibrancy to an academic community. Diversity is a source of innovation, energy, and growth. For us, “diversity is our strength.”

CDE welcomes your support and involvement as we strive to advance Mason’s commitment to ensuring a diverse and inclusive learning, working, and living environment.
